Public Forum: The issues and challenges of tackling corruption in Malaysia

I’m sharing this event info by Azrul Mohd Khalib

The Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) will be organising a public forum to discuss the current challenges of tackling corruption in Malaysia on 6 August in Kuching.

This public forum is part of an ongoing campaign which is intended to strengthen ongoing advocacy efforts for institutional reform to combat corruption and promote good governance.

We would like to ask for your kind consideration to join us at the public forum and share your thoughts on this matter.

The details are as follows:

Event: The issues and challenges of tackling corruption in Malaysia
Date: 6 August 2016 (Saturday)
Time: 0900 – 1200 hrs
Venue: Riverside Majestic, 93756, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, 93100 Kuching, Sarawak
Tel: +60 82-532 222

This public forum is the second in a series of similar events held under the #NyahKorupsi campaign.

Current events have resulted in increased public concern and demand for greater accountability and transparency to ensure that criminal justice is enforced fairly and impartially.

It is necessary for the A-G not only to act independently but to be seen to be acting independently in his decisions on whether to prosecute or not especially when high profile cases are involved. As long as the Attorney-General holds the power to decide on prosecutions, the problems faced by the current A-G will continue to be faced by all future Attorneys-Generals.

The Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission must also be provided with sufficient powers and independent authority in order for them to be able to do their job effectively without fear or favour.

A copy of the tentative programme is attached for your reference.

Please do not hesitate to contact Azrul Mohd Khalib (azrul@ideas.org.my), should you have any inquiries or need further clarification on any of the above.

We do hope that you will be able to join us at this event as your contribution would be much needed and highly valued.
