Stance: Against TPP

The main bone of contention is whether the proposal would be revealed to the American public for review, GMO Sources (for food products for internal use) & the labeling of the country of origin of product to ensure it does not come from countries exploiting slave labor such as Vietnam, Malaysia & other developing countries.

Stance: Against TPP

The TPPA makes me uncomfortable because it lacks the inclusiveness “ingredient”. The fact that content of this agreement is kept away from the eyes of the public is an indication that the negotiations are kept secret from the people of the country. As a citizen concerned about the environment, the TPPA leaves no room for a signatory country to protect its natural resources and biodiversity. I may not be well versed in its contents on the economy but this I know. If Malaysia signs the TPPA, Malaysians and the very environment that they live in will be threatened by big corporate and capitalistic conglomerates and our own backyard will be at the mercy of these big companies. I urge all Malaysians to at least rise up to the occasion and be privy to the latest happenings of the TPPA and raise your voice of concern. Without your voice, the existing Malaysian government will sign an agreement that will compromise sustainability of the country. #janganjualnegara #bantahtppa

Stance: Against TPP

Malaysia already tried to negotiate a free trade agreement back in 2007 with the US, yet it failed: Malaysia pulled out because it reached the conclusion that there were no gains for the country, only losses. Back then there were 58 red flags. How many are there with the TPP? 75! (http://www.janganjualnegara.com/#/redline) So how is it then that now Malaysia can accept this so called “free trade agreement” (even though only 6 out of the 30 chapters are about trade)? What has changed in between 2007 and 2015? People still need access to medicine… The country must still keep its sovereignty from foreign investors… The environment must still be protected. These things have not changed. The only thing that has changed is the prime minister of the country… I think by now we can agree 2.6b is not working for the good of Malaysia, but for the good of his own pocket. And the TPP is his deal. Trust him? Hah! No thanks, we got way too screwed already.

Stance: Against TPP

It contains faith-based IP provisions (Lemley. 2015) as opposed to evidence-based IP provisions. Huge pharmaceutical lobby behind it, with PhRMA lobbying the US Trade Representative directly. Malaysia already pays more for medicines compared to countries in the same income bracket, 84.7% of originator medicine requests are substituted with generics, and health budgets are being cut every year. TRIPS+ provisions is not what patients here need.

Stance: Against TPP

I am against the TPPA because:
1) the cost of critical generic medicines, and the period of time granted to the patents of new medicine, will go up;
2) it opens the door to Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) to enter the country en mass (some GM corn and soy products have already entered the country, according to Consumers Association of Penang!);
3) international corporations would have more power in regulating what appears on the Internet;
4) the ISDS component would empower corporations to take national governments to court for clamping down on company practices that endanger our natural environment and the rights of the workers;
5) local industries would be bested by international corporations in terms of competition;
6) corporations would have more power in fencing off more content through stricter copyright laws;
7) Malaysia would be obligated to ratify the International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants 1991 (UPOV 91), which is against the interests of our small farmers by way of disallowing the practice of farmers exchanging farm-saved seeds amongst themselves and selling such seeds, gives seed companies longer monopolies, as well as removing the biosafety protections and anti-biopiracy provisions as granted under the existing Protection of New Plant Varieties Act 2004.
